Volume of retail trade up by 0.6% in euro area


In November 2018 compared with October 2018, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade increased by 0.6% in the euro area (EA19) and by 0.7% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat.

In October, the retail trade volume increased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU28. In November 2018 compared with November 2017, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 1.1% in the euro area and by 2.1% in the EU28.

Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State

In the euro area in November 2018, compared with October 2018, the volume of retail trade increased by 1.2% for non-food products and for automotive fuel, while food, drinks and tobacco decreased by 0.9%. In the EU28, the retail trade volume increased by 1.5% for automotive fuel and by 1.4% for non-food products, while food, drinks and tobacco fell by 0.6%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Latvia (+2.4%), Poland and Estonia (both +2.1%). Decreases were observed in Slovenia (-1.6%) and Austria (-0.5%).

Annual comparison by retail sector and by Member State

In the euro area in November 2018, compared with November 2017, the volume of retail trade increased by 2.9% for automotive fuel, by 1.5% for non-food products, and by 0.2% for food, drinks and tobacco.

In the EU28, the retail trade volume increased by 3.9% for automotive fuel, by 2.8% for non-food products, and by 0.6% for food, drinks and tobacco. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest yearly increases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Slovenia (+10.7%), Romania (+7.2%) and Lithuania (+7.0%). Decreases were observed in Belgium (-1.6%), Malta (-1.3%) and Austria (-0.2%).
