Mohamed Nasheed, the former Maldives president, warned that Britain’s exit from the EU would harm the interests of Commonwealth countries by removing their leverage in Brussels.

“Out” supporters such as Boris Johnson and Daniel Hannan MEP have argued that Britain’s membership of the EU has damaged its relationship with the Commonwealth.

But Mr Nasheed has told The Telegraph that he believes that UK should not leave because Europe would become more fractured and it would damage relations between Britain’s old colonies and the EU.

“The UK in the union gives a voice to Commonwealth countries, able to forge stronger ties with countries such as Estonia,” Mr Nasheed said as he urged voters to say no to Brexit.
