Commission consults on review of Directive on Deposit Guarantee Schemes

The Consultation focuses in particular on the effectiveness of the potential options, on compliance costs, impacts on competition and other impacts, as well as on other implied costs and benefits.

The Commission started a consultation in the run-up of the planned review of the Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive. The Consultation focuses in particular on the effectiveness of the potential options, on compliance costs, impacts on competition and other impacts, as well as on other implied costs and benefits.

 

The consultation addresses one of the issues covered by the Commission Communication Driving European recovery, which is intended to tackle the most important shortcomings in the markets that have been observed in the current financial crisis. The Commission committed to propose additional measures needed to reinforce depositor, investor and policy holder protection.

 

Therefore, the Commission set its objectives as follows:

- strengthen depositor confidence,

- enhance financial stability,

- protect a part of depositors' wealth,

- enhance the Internal Market.

 

Deadline for consultation is 27 July 2009.
