POLITICO: Barnier: UK has the ‘right’ to a European commissioner

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said he is in favor of the United Kingdom nominating a new European commissioner, along with other EU member countries, in an interview by Bild am Sonntag.

"As long as Britain is a member of the EU, it has all the rights and responsibilities," Barnier said. "This includes the right to a commissioner and the right to be represented by members of the European Parliament. There will not be a two-tier Parliament."

Barnier denied rumors that he is vying for the top job as European Commission President, and restated his support for Manfred Weber, the European People's Party Spitzenkandidat.

"I am, like him, a member of the EPP, and as such loyal," Barnier said.

Barnier said the current Brexit deal is the only way for the U.K. to leave the EU in an orderly manner. [...]
