Financial Times: UK to hold European elections on May 23

The UK will hold European Parliament elections on May 23, the government has confirmed.

David Lidington, the de facto deputy prime minister, told the BBC that the elections would go ahead as there is no longer enough parliamentary time to pass the necessary Brexit legislation.

The government had previously insisted that European Parliament elections would only take place if a Brexit deal had not passed through the House of Commons by the end of May. Mr Lidington’s remarks will be seen as an acceptance of what many MPs across all parties have thought for several weeks. [...]
