POLITICO: Liberals launch election campaign but play by their own rules

The ALDE party nominated ‘Team Europe,’ including Margarethe Vestager and Guy Verhofstadt.

The EU's liberal prime ministers and party leaders officially nominated their European election campaign team at a brief ceremony Thursday, which illustrated their distaste for the so-called Spitzenkandidat or lead candidate process.

The liberal ALDE Party held an electoral congress prior to the European Council to kick off its campaign for the European election and nominate seven "Team Europe" liberal candidates. They are likely to be the ALDE's nominees for a raft of powerful EU posts that will become vacant this year — including Commission president, Council president and the bloc's high representative for foreign policy.

The list — reported Tuesday by POLITICO — includes Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager, liberal leader Guy Verhofstadt as well as Nicola Beer, the lead candidate for the German liberal FDP party; Luis Garicano from the Spanish center-right Ciudadanos; Violeta Bulc of Slovenia, the European commissioner for transport; and Katalin Cseh, founder and lead candidate of the liberal Momentum party in Hungary.
