Pervenche Beres elected new Chair of ECON

28 July 2004

The French Socialist Pervenche Beres was elected as the new Chair of the Parliaments Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. Elected as Vice-Chairs were:
  • José Manuel Garcia – Margallo y Marfil (EPP-ED, ES)
  • Guntars Krasts (UEN, LV)
  • John Purvis (EPP-ED, UK)

The vote, originally foreseen for last weeks Strasburg session, was delayed due to the postponement of the vote over the proposed EPP candidate of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.

Following the European Parliament's constituent sitting earlier this week, the 20 parliamentary committees held their first meetings on Thursday and Friday in Strasbourg to elect their chairs and vice-chairs. The number of EP committees has increased from 17 to 20 in the new Parliament.
