Süddeutsche Zeitung: The UK's identity crisis

11 July 2017

Joschka Fischer, Green Party politician and former German Foreign Minister, writes that the identity crisis is one of the reasons why the country abandoned its highly advantageous geopolitical and economic position within the EU, and thus on the world stage.

Süddeutsche Zeitung published an op-ed by Joschka Fischer, Green Party politician and former German Foreign Minister, in which he suggests that the British, usually known for their cool and calm demeanour, are losing their pragmatism. He continues that the UK is currently undergoing not only an identity crisis, but also a crisis of confidence within its political and economic elites, who now appear more and more detached from UK citizens.
According to Fischer, the identity crisis is one of the reasons why the country abandoned its highly advantageous geopolitical and economic position within the EU, and thus on the world stage. While the UK is losing a great economic and political deal, the EU is also losing its second-largest economy and primary guarantor of security.
