El Mundo: The winners and losers of Brexit

19 May 2017

Spanish newspaper El Mundo highlights how UK citizens are already feeling the consequences of Brexit due to growing economic inequality.

The UK’s largest fortunes have massively benefited from a ‘Brexit boom’, while the average family will be €600 worse off this year due to stagnant wages and rising prices. For the author this typifies the paradox of Brexit, seen as a protest vote against elites but which has merely been an opportunity for the wealthy, many of whom are generous Tory donors, to make themselves even wealthier. The issue has also become a focus of the current election campaign with Labour unveiling its campaign slogan “For the many, not the few”, and Lib Dem spokesperson Nick Clegg criticizing the government spending billions on the Brexit ‘black hole’, while public services desperately need investment.
