UK: Lord Hill is nominated as EU Commissioner

17 July 2014

The UK has nominated the Leader of the House of Lords as its next EU Commissioner.

Lord Hill, 53, until last week the Leader of the House of Lords, has been nominated as the next British Commissioner.

He has held  middle ranking ministerial posts in the current government. In the 1990's he was a Special Advisor to (amongst others) Kenneth Clarke; he briefly worked for the Prime Minster John Major, before leaving to set up his own Public Affairs Business.

OpenEurope argue he is a sceptic; BritishInfluence say he is a potential reformer. All agree he is a surprising choice. An interview with Paul Waugh in February reveals more of his background and political posture.
