Commission consultation on ‘Card Stop Europe’

01 March 2004

The Commission launched a consultation on the possible establishment of an EU-wide system for cancelling lost and stolen credit and payment cards. Such a service would be based on a single phone number.

A survey based on interviews with EU citizens (Eurobarometer) on the effectiveness of a new single phone number to report lost and stolen cards was conducted in all EU countries in December 2003. 83% of respondents considered that introducing a single number would be an effective measure. About half of those interviewed said they would be prepared to pay for such service.

Comments are invited until 30th April 2004.
