EAPB comment on expert group report on costumer mobility

05 June 2007

Commenting on the report of the Expert Group on Customer Mobility the EAPB underlined that the views of the banking industry and consumer experts diverge on many issues.

The report contains several recommendations which would constitute an enormous burden for both banks and customers, EAPB argues. Consumer experts consider customer mobility as being a problem and request for account number portability.

Henning Schoppmann, Secretary-General of the EAPB: “Account number portability would require fundamental changes to existing infrastructure within every single bank. The current and well-functioning IBAN and BIC standards, which are essential for the creation of the Single Euo Payments Area (SEPA) would have to be replaced. The introduction of portable account numbers would cause a complete overhaul of the current structure for bank acount numbers and therefore oblige every single bank and customer to switch to a new bank account number.”
