POLITICO: Macron: UK must show flexibility during post-Brexit negotiation

French PM Emmanuel Macron asked the United Kingdom to "show flexibility" during negotiations over its future relationship with the European Union in the coming year.

"It will be a complex negotiation that should be approached in cold blood by our negotiator Michel Barnier," Macron said Tuesday in a statement to the press delivered alongside visiting Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković in Paris.

He laid out two principles that should guide the negotiation.

"The preservation of deep ties with the U.K., namely on foreign policy and security, and the defense of the interests of the EU," Macron said, explicitly highlighting fishing. "The U.K. wants a short negotiation that ends by the end of 2020, it will be up to the U.K. to show, during the negotiation, flexibility that is in line with these ties to Europe and this ambitious schedule."

Plenković, who has just taken over the rotating presidency of the EU, agreed with Macron.

"We hope we will have a realistic framework that will allow us to reach an agreement over the next 11 months on how to achieve the best future relationship between the EU and U.K.," Plenković said.
