VP Rehn: "Strong and constructive partnership" between Commission and France

Rehn met with French Economic and Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici to discuss France's draft budget bill for 2014, as well as structural reforms in France.

Translated from the French

Today Mr Moscovici presented to me the draft budget bill for 2014: "France, focus on growth and employment"; and I consider it a sign of a strong and constructive partnership, which is precisely the spirit of European economic governance.

I am aware of the efforts made by France to restore its public finances. This bill is marked by financial responsibility and prudence. The growth assumptions adopted, although slightly higher than ours, appear plausible. Regarding the public deficit for 2013, as part of our autumn forecast, which will be published on 5 November, the Commission will assess if structural adjustment is made in accordance with the recommendations of the Council of 21 June.

For 2014, I am pleased that the budgetary targets are in line with the Council recommendations. After analysing the various measures proposed, the Commission will issue its opinion on the draft budget in mid-November.

Beyond budgetary aspects, we also discussed structural reforms in France. We share the belief that the ambitious reforms carried out over the past year should be continued and strengthened to increase the growth potential of the economy and the competitiveness of French companies.
