Parliament: Conference follow-up: citizens ask about progress (video)

More than 500 of the citizens who took part attended a feedback event in the European Parliament in Brussels on 2 December. They questioned representatives from the Parliament, the European Commission and the Council about progress on their recommendations.

People from all over Europe were central to the Conference. The year-long democratic exercise aimed at improving the EU concluded in May 2022 and resulted in 49 proposals including more than 300 measures. EU institutions promised to follow up.

"The European Parliament is ready to do its part in delivering on the proposals of the Conference on the Future of Europe in the interest of the 450 million Europeans that it represents," said Parliament President Roberta Metsola. The Conference's proposals have become a key driver in the work of the Parliament, MEPs said.

Participants in the event asked about all of the topics that the Conference dealt with, from climate change and the digital transition to migration and threats to the EU budget. Many called for the proposals regarding participatory democracy to be fed into EU policy making, although a few doubted how useful the Conference had been.

Guy Verhofstadt (Renew, Belgium), one of the co-chairs of the Conference, said politicians "need to keep delivering not just on the proposals but on the spirit in which they were written - a new idea of Europe, fit for the challenges of the future”.
