The Telegraph: Civil servants 'highlighting Brexit concerns in official emails to guard against Chilcot-style inquiry'


Officials at the Department for Exiting the European Union have reportedly started setting out concerns about the lack of work being done to prepare Britain for a “no deal” scenario with Brussels.

They reportedly fear the prospect of a post-Brexit inquiry similar to that carried out into the Iraq War which could be launched if the UK’s departure hits the rocks.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed that Sir Jeremy Heywood, the UK’s top civil servant, is relaxed about a “no deal” outcome because of a belief that the Government will not walk away from talks with nothing. [...]

The Spectator suggests that civil servants are seeking to “cover their backs” with a clear paper trail demonstrating they raised concerns just in case their work is opened up to ferocious scrutiny in the future.

The magazine cites concerns about an apparent lack of work being done on preparing for “no deal” with Brussels and whether the UK will actually be in a position to quit the bloc without agreeing future trading terms.  

The article suggests Sir Jeremy may be relaxed about the Government’s preparations for “no deal” because such a scenario is not seen as a likely outcome by some in Whitehall.

But fears about a lack of planning have prompted outrage from Eurosceptic Tories who believe the Government must be ready to deliver on Theresa May’s repeated vow that “no deal is better than a bad deal”. [...]
