POLITICO: Emmanuel Macron will be ‘tough’ on Brexit, says key adviser


Jean Pisani-Ferry, economic adviser to France’s President-elect Emmanuel Macron, says the newly elected president will be “tough” on Brexit negotiations, but he will not seek to punish Britain.

Pisani told BBC Radio 4 Monday that there are different interests from both the EU and U.K. to the talks. “So there will be a tough negotiation and he will be tough,” Pisani-Ferry said.

He added that Britain will not be punished, even though, “[Macron] believes that today Europe is part of the solution to the problems we’re facing.”

Pisani-Ferry said no one had an interest in a hard Brexit, and added that there was a mutual interest in maintaining economic and security ties once Britain leaves the Union. [...]
