Polish President: No further EU integration without approval of citizens

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said: "It is impossible to achieve lasting and full European integration if the changes are not approved by the EU citizens".

According to the president, European integration started as a conscious political project based on the experience of Europeans stemming from the tragic history of two world wars. "Today we should remember this lesson as it is impossible to achieve effective, lasting and full integration if the changes are not approved by the EU citizens", the Polish president stressed.

President Komorowski added that the only way to win approval of Europeans for the changes taking place in the EU is to increase their participation in decision-making concerning the EU future. The president added that the ongoing economic crisis was not the best moment to promote far-reaching changes in the EU. "But we all believe that this difficult period will end and it will be possible to enter into dialogue with the public to debate further EU integration", President Komorowski concluded.
