Payment systems: Commission sets out new plan to fight fraud

The Commission published a new Fraud Prevention Action Plan (FPAP) to fight payment fraud. The new plan seeks to increase confidence in non-cash payments made by, for example, credit card or bank transfer. Priorities include the security of payment products and systems, the co-operation between public authorities and the private sector, the integration of new Member States in the EU fraud prevention network, and closer ties with non-EU countries. The new FPAP builds on a previous 2001-2003 programme and will complement the EU's forthcoming Directive on payments service, to be proposed in 2005.
