The Times: Hard Brexit could wipe nearly 10% off Ireland's output

A hard Brexit could wipe almost 10 per cent off Ireland’s GDP and have a much more severe economic effect than previously thought, a report has warned.

Research conducted by the European Commission’s agriculture and rural affairs committee has warned that the effect on Ireland of Britain leaving the EU without a trade deal could be more than twice as damaging as previously predicted.

The report’s publication comes as negotiators struggle to break an impasse that threatens to plunge Britain and the EU into a no-deal “cliff-edge” scenario.

The research, which is to be presented to MEPs next month, estimated that the economic effect of the UK’s departure would be “marginal” in all EU countries except Ireland, which it finds vulnerable to Brexit. [...]
