El Mundo: Spanish frustrated after May's offer for EU citizens

30 June 2017

Following Theresa May’s announcement of plans to establish a new ID card for EU citizens following Brexit, El Mundo spoke with Spanish nationals resident in the UK who described the proposals as misleading and insufficient.

A representative of a group which advocates for the rights of the 3 million affected EU citizens expressed his ‘bitter disappointment’ at the proposals which he said will endanger many people. Similarly, the founder of a group for UK-based Spanish citizens added that while the government is seeking to present it as a positive step forward closer inspection reveals numerous discrepancies and a lack of information as to what form the register would take. Finally, the article highlights the frustration felt by the 150,000 who have already tackled the difficult and expensive process of applying for permanent residency, only to find themselves back at square one.
