Financial Times: Midsized UK businesses turn sour on Brexit


The UK’s midsized businesses no longer expect to emerge from Brexit stronger as the prospect of leaving the EU without a deal grows.

The quarterly Brexit Monitor from RSM, the audit and consulting firm, has turned negative with more companies believing that Brexit will damage their companies in the next two years than help them.

Since Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016, midmarket businesses had been more positive than big multinational companies.

But between July and September this year, sentiment on the impact of Brexit on business, measured by YouGov, dropped from 113 in the second quarter of 2018 to 99 in the third quarter on a scale of 0 to 200 — where 0 represents a strong negative effect, 100 no effect and 200 a strong positive effect.

Sentiment about the effect of Brexit on the overall UK economy during the next two years slipped from 107 to 95, negative territory, in the same timeframe. The survey polls decision makers from 315 companies with annual turnover between £30m and £300m.[...]
