SPIEGEL: German Industry presents its summit wish list

Spiegel reports how the Federation of German Industry (BDI) is urging Theresa May and the remaining 27 EU leaders ahead of next week's summit to agree on a "status quo" transition period that would preserve the present trade arrangements beyond Britain's departure date of 29 March 2019.

Spiegel comments that the German industry seems to be caught up in unrealistic dreams when demanding that everything about the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union should stay the same. Their worries come as no surprise, however, as an exit without any regulation to follow could mean customs controls causing enormous costs and delays. Most companies, according to BDI, expect a loss of 24-72 hours per delivery. This would be a problem in particular for the German car industry, which relies on short delivery times for the so-called just-in-time manufacturing.
