Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles re-elected Chair of European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee

Amid fears that David Cameron's veto had isolated the UK in Brussels, MEPs from across Europe and the political spectrum have today re-elected Liberal Democrat MEP, Sharon Bowles, as Chair of the European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.

The committee, widely regarded as the Parliament's most powerful, is responsible for legislation in the headline areas of economic governance and financial services.

Sharon, who will chair the committee for the remaining two-and-a-half years of the parliamentary term, has won acclaim for her leadership of the committee and wider contribution to the global policy debate, and was recently named on The Times '100 to watch in 2012' list.

Speaking from Brussels today, Sharon Bowles MEP said: "I am grateful to all colleagues for their support and am sure that we will continue to be an engine for ideas and policy-making as we face the sovereign crisis and the need for growth.

"On the committee's agenda this year are some big dossiers, including the latest legislation on Capital Requirements, Markets in Financial Instruments, Market Abuse, and Economic Governance.

"The City of London is an important financial centre, with expertise drawn from all Member States, and an asset that the EU needs to maximise.

"I take very seriously the responsibilities of Chair and will be at the forefront of efforts to re-engage the UK and put it at the heart of Europe."
